Jet magazine reporter Adelle M. Banks recently wrote an article in the April 25 edition entitled “Blacks’ Conditions worsen, Urban League Reports”.

According to reports by the National Urban League the status of the nations black folks has declined in comparison to that of Whites.
“While some economists have triumphantly declared that the recession is technically over, we say today that there is no complete recovery while the unemployment rate in Black America stands at more than 15 percent,” said Marc Morial, president and CEO of the National Urban League.

Speakers who presented at Howard University in Crampton Auditorium detailed findings from the annual report and featured feedback from a panel of experts. They all addressed various ways to improve African American employment from public private partnerships to increase urban training for broadband, health care and green jobs to lobbying on Capitol Hill to prevent budget cuts and bills that could hurt the already unemployed.

Of most interest- Singletary urged lobbying for bills that aid ex offenders, and people with low credit scores in gaining employment. Apparently there are pieces of legislation across the states that would forbid employers from using credit scores as a part of the hiring process. The latter would be incredibly beneficial.
